Dr. Brown Budde is a certified functional dry needling physical therapist in Columbus, OH. You may have heard dry needling therapy referred to in a number of ways: dry needling, functional intramuscular dry needling, intramuscular manual therapy, trigger point dry needling, physical therapy needling, needling physical therapy, or dry needling therapy. Whatever it is called, below is a brief overview of dry needling. Intramuscular Manual Therapy (Dry Needling) is a technique used to treat myofascial pain that uses the insertion of a dry needle, without medication, into a trigger point, with the goal of releasing/inactivating the trigger points and relieving pain. Dry needling is used for the treatment of pain and dysfunction with musculoskeletal conditions.
Common injuries treated with dry needling include:
- Chronic Pain
- Acute Strains and Sprains
- Muscle Trigger Points / Spasm
- Muscle Strains
- Tendon Injuries
- Low Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Shoulder Pain
- Knee Pain
- Overuse Injuries
- Iliotibial Band Syndrome
- Glute Pain
- Piriformis Syndrome
- Achilles Tendonitis / Tendonopathy
- Calf Strains
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Shin Splints
Trigger points are caused by injury or overload to muscles, producing a shortening of muscle fibers into taut bands and resulting in hypoxia (decreased blood flow) and inflammation, which activates painful nerve fibers or nociceptors. Dry needling therapy treatment is designed to restore normal muscle function by desensitizing painful nerve endings, thus improving circulation and sensory communication to the spinal cord. The advantages of dry needling include an immediate reduction in local, referred and widespread pain, and the restoration of range of motion and muscle activation patterns. Dry needling is a very safe treatment for musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction; however, there are some inherent risks. These are minimized by using standardized guidelines and having a thorough understanding of anatomy. Dr. Brown Budde has undergone advanced training and utilizes current literature in the select use of dry needling. Most of the risks are mild and transient and include minor bruising and residual soreness. The most serious adverse side effects include pneumothorax (lung collapse due to air in the chest wall) and infection but have been reported to be rare. If you have a medical condition and are unsure if you are a candidate for dry needling, please consults Dr. Brown Budde and possibly your physician about specific risks and benefits related to your specific condition.
